Article 44 of the Indian Constitution advocates the creation of a Uniform Civil Code for all citizens of India. At present, there is no uniform civil code in India, due to which different laws of marriage, divorce, etc. are prevalent in different religious communities. If a Uniform Civil Code is enacted for all religious communities, then the laws governing matters like marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance and succession become uniform for all citizens of India. In the past, the 21st Law Commission had sought suggestions from the general public and religious organizations in the context of the Uniform Civil Code.A large number of people had given their views to the Law Commission, then the commission had submitted its report saying that there is no need for uniform civil code at present and more discussion is required in this regard.Taking this forward, the 22nd Law Commission has asked for fresh suggestions. At present, the process of suggestions sought in this regard by the 21st Law Commission has completed 3 years. In this interval, many decisions of the courts have also come in the context of Uniform Civil Code. A press note issued by the Law Commission states that the 22nd Law Commission has decided to seek the views and suggestions from the general public and religious organizations in the context of Uniform Civil Code. The commission has said that those who are interested in this regard and want to express their views can give their opinion and suggestions to the commission. The 22nd Law Commission of India, headed by former Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court, Rituraj Awasthi, can be sent by all people to the commission's website and email address. The Law Commission has set a time limit of 30 days for submission of views.
